Local Marion County Citizen, George Cole Jernigan, Federally Indicted on April 15, 2026 Prepares for Trial

For those who live in Marion County, Georgia, local citizen, George “Cole” Jernigan is a charming elder of the community and nephew of the count attorney, Wayne Jernigan. To my surprise I was notified that Cole was federally indicted and was preparing for trial.

I reviewed court documents available via Pacer, and found that a federal grand jury indicted Cole Jernigan citing that he knowingly possessed a firearm as a convicted felon on December 14, 2023.

Paul Culp, a local agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, from the Columbus satellite office, indicated that he physically examined 11 individual firearms that were taken into custody from Cole Jernigan and cited that they were not manufactured in the state of Georgia and were received and/or possessed in the State of Georgia and had traveled in interstate and/or foreign commerce in violation of 18 USC §§ 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8).

On April 24, 2026, Roger Montgomery, a lawyer familiar to the families of Marion County, entered in his appearance on behalf of Cole Jernigan in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia.

On April 28, 2026, Cole Jernigan signed an order setting conditions of bond, set at $10,000, and was order (1) not to obtain a passport; (2) not possess any narcotic or controlled substance; (3) not possess a firearm or other weapon; (4) not to leave the Middle Georgia District jurisdiction, to attend probation; (5) undergo supervision as ordered; (6) to surrender his passport; (7) to submit to testing for prohibited substances; and (8) participate in a program of inpatient and outpatient substance abuse therapy if directed.

On May 8 , 2026, US Attorney William Keyes, filed the GOVERNMENT’S NOTICE OF COMPLIANCE WITH STANDARD PRE-TRIAL ORDER AND DEMAND FOR RECIPROCAL DISCOVERY AND NOTICE OF CERTAIN DEFENSES, which requires the United States and the Defendant to produce all evidence as a requirement of discovery.

As it stands, it appears that voir dire is about to convene, where jury members are questioned in preparation for a trial.

So, the question that has me scratching my head is, “When was Cole Jernigan originally arrested, which gave him a predisposition as a felon in possession of firearms? What was he arrested for? When was he arrested? And how does the possession of firearms tie him to narcotics/substance abuse?

Cole is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
